Their making the wrong assumptions. Most animals go into trance during birth, or laying eggs. It is a left over evolutionary trait that can be exploited.

Depends how you look at it, what we see as natural could be control, Derren Brown proves this, and supernatural can be applied as a deffintion of seeing passed the looking glass, seeing the illusion which exists in society, for what it really is, a sleeping state.
